Gideon Obarzanek’s Circle Dance

Performed By Yellow Wheel

Salon

Long before Gideon Obarzanek founded renowned contemporary dance company Chunky Move in 1995, he was learning traditional Israeli folk dance on kibbutz.

The core choreography in Circle Dance began its life there, and has been extrapolated from the memory of a movement that Obarzanek has found himself returning to, and drawing inspiration from.

Prior to Obarzanek’s recent appointment as Co–Artistic Director of Melbourne International Arts Festival (2020-2023) he led Chunky Move to international acclaim in under a decade. He has performed diverse works on stage, in film and installations across the world. In 2015 he created Circle Dance in collaboration with the graduate students of the Victorian College of the Arts School of Dance.

Performed for the first time by Australian dance company Yellow Wheel, watch the dancers succumb to an unrelenting physical drive in this intense performance, the Israeli folk roots of which are occasionally revealed to only the most observant eye.
