Elisabeth Murdoch Hall
The 22-piece avant-garde funk and klezmer ensemble, is renowned for packing their epic live shows with tradition, theatre and expert musicianship.
At their core is a collection of centuries-old Yiddish drinking songs, plucked from the lost shtetls of their past and reimagined with a fresh perspective. The heaving band includes jazz musician and composer Simon Starr, Husky Gawenda and Gideon Preiss from the indie-folk band Husky, and Shir Madness’s founding artistic director Willy Zygier.
This wild band infuses the traditional tunes with new takes from across genres, including elements of free jazz and big band influences. There’s some late ‘70s avant-garde funk here and a little contemporary electronica there. It’s a daring and unique fusion that demands to be seen and heard, if you can stop yourself from dancing.
